BRUSSELS, Aug. 14, 2014 (RISI) -The members of the German corrugated board industry association Verband der Wellpappen-Industrie (VDW) managed to increase their sales in the first half of the year. According to the association, some 3.69 billion m² of corrugated board were sold from January through June, around 1.9% or 69 million m² more than in the same period last year.
"While the growth was still at 1.2% in Q1, it more than doubled to 2.6% in the second quarter. The upward trend
we noticed at the start of the year in our sector is getting stronger," VDW managing director Oliver Wolfrum said in
Regarding the cost side, the association said that the situation the corrugated board manufacturers find themselves in has - temporarily - relaxed somewhat. "There has been a discrepancy between steadily rising paper prices and a trend towards decreasing sales for years," Wolfrum said, adding that in his mind the current development on the paper market will give the association members a short break only, as paper manufacturers announced price hikes of up to Euro 70/tonne ($93.5/tonne) for containerboard from August.
