Despite a growing Pictou County protest movement against Northern Pulp for violating emissions limits, a 2013 survey of air pollution levels in Canada's towns and cities puts Pictou in the middle of the pack.

The National Air Pollution Surveillance Network has stations in over 200 Canadian communities, including one on Beeches Road in Pictou.
