Catalyst Paper CEO says BC Hydro power rate increases will wipe out financial sacrifices made to revive company

Wed, Feb 13, 2013

VANCOUVER, BC, Feb. 13, 2013 (Vancouver Sun) -On Oct. 6, 2012, The Vancouver Sun published my opinion piece headlined Eliminating barriers at home will help business compete globally. In the piece, I stated that manufacturing companies that sell their products on the international market, such as B.C.'s Catalyst Paper, often face barriers at home that undermine their global competitiveness.

Having just exited creditor protection, Catalyst circulated the article to local, provincial and federal officials to encourage elimination of barriers to investment and export, like BC Hydro rate hikes which increased Catalyst's hydro cost by $27 million. The response of a senior official in the B.C. energy ministry demonstrated the chasm between those in Victoria who set rate increases and the employees, communities and customers in the real world who pay for them.

Catalyst Paper is the largest industrial purchaser of electricity in B.C. We buy 20 per cent of BC Hydro's industrial load - five per cent of all the electricity BC Hydro generates.
